Packing guide

What to bring to a UCSB dorm and what to leave at home.

Updated: May 2026

A good dorm setup is about weekly usefulness, not maximum quantity. Bring what supports sleep, showers, storage, and school, then wait to see what your room actually needs before buying more.

The essentials you will use right away

  • Bedding that makes sleep easy from the first night.
  • Shower gear, towels, and a simple bathroom routine.
  • A few storage basics so the room does not become clutter immediately.
  • One desk setup that makes schoolwork feel easy to start.

Things students often overpack

Too much decor, too many clothes for every possible version of California weather, and random “college” items that look useful online but never get touched once classes start.

| Bring | Skip or wait | | --- | --- | | Simple storage and room basics | Large organizers before you know your layout | | Daily-use toiletries and bedding | Novelty dorm gadgets | | A small number of things that make the room feel yours | Decor you bought because it looked good in a move-in video |

Best rule

Pack for week one and your first month. If you miss something later, that is much easier to fix than arriving with too much stuff and nowhere to put it.
